Air Abrasion

What is air abrasion?

Air abrasion technology is the use of a high pressure spray of aluminum oxide, which cuts through the tooth structure and removes decay, old white filings and prepares the tooth for the dental sealant.

What is the advantage of air abrasion?

There is no pain, vibration, heat, smell or drilling noise. This procedure is safe and the aluminum oxide is harmless if accidentally swallowed. Treatment can be completed in less time and most often without the need of anesthesia.

What is the disadvantage of air abrasion?

Air abrasion doesn't remove old amalgam (silver) filling and is limited to small or medium size cavities. The aluminum oxide powder is messy, and air abrasion technology can be costly. As of yet, not all the dental offices have the technology.

Regarding the disadvantages you have sited: With the right air abrasion device and in the right hands air abrasion need not be messy. Moreover it can do more involved cavities and when compared to other dental tools is very reasonably price
