Conscious Sedation

What is conscious sedation?
Conscious sedation is the use of medication to relax a child without loosing consciousness. It is recommended for uncooperative children with severe anxiety. Usually these children are young or have trouble managing their anxiety.

What is the advantage of conscious sedation?
Conscious sedation aids in calming a child so that she can accept dental treatment.
Prevent injury to the child and provide a better environment for providing dental care. 
 
What medications are used?
Many different agents can be used for conscious sedation, from inhalation agents to medicines provided orally or by injection. None of these sedatives render the child unconscious. The Pedodontist will discuss the treatment recommendation with the parents.

Is sedation safe?
Pedodontists are trained to administer, monitor and manage sedated patients.

What special instructions should I follow before the sedation appointment?

  1. Minimal discussion of the dental appointment with the child.
  2. Should your child become ill, contact your pediatric dentist.
  3. It is important not to have a meal before a sedation appointment.
  4. The Pedodontist will inform you about food and fluid intake guidelines prior to the sedation appointment. 

 
What special instructions should I follow after the sedation appointment?
Appropriate supervision is recommended. The pedodontist will discuss specific post sedation instructions with you, including appropriate diet, physical activity.
