Getting a deep cleaning does not mean you are going to loose your teeth, it is a step forward in maintaining healthy gums and bone to support the teeth, you should not get nervous about it and you should ask your dentist about the degree of gum disease you have, it could be minor or severe but that is something your dentist know about.
What to expect is numbing of the area where the deep cleaning procedure will be done and by using ultrasonic device and scalers the dentist or the hygienist will start removing the build up and plaque around the teeth and the gums, many patients find it a pleasant procedure and very effective.

I just went to the dentist and they told be that I had slight signs of gingivitis...I got freaked out!! They told me that I should consider getting an antibacterial rinse or something to that effect for an extra $50... I was going to do it but then I heard him say the same exact thing to another patient... is he just trying to make more money or is this something I really need to do?? Thanks

The rinse is chlorhexidine gluconate an antimicrobial agent used in dentistry to treat gingivitis, you should do it if it is recommended.
