It's been considered impossible to heal the pulp of the tooth  once necrosis has set in.  Recently new research at the University of Minnesota and also in England has shown promise of stem cell autogoneous regeneration of pulpal tissues. If this would come about the need for endodontic therapy would be greatley reduced.
